One of the objectives of every nature-loving Catalan is to walk to the top of the Pica d’Estats (Pallars Sobirà), which is the highest mountain in Catalonia and probably one of the most difficult peaks to scale in the Pirineos. On summer weekends, its footpaths become veritable processions of trekkers, all of whom share a single idea; that of reaching the roof of Catalonia, from where it is possible to enjoy magnificent views of the Pirineu (Spain) and – according to some – even the distant sight of the Mountain of Montserrat. on very clear days. The starting point, at the Pla de Boet, is at an altitude of 1,860 metres, while the summit - which can be reached after a 6-hour walk - stands at 3,143 metres. It is necessary to use crampons and an ice-axe when there is hard snow on the north slope.
