  • The Museu de les Papallones de Catalunya (Butterfly Museum of Catalonia) of Ribera de Cardós (El Pallars Sobirà - Pyrenees) contains a truly unique scientific catalogue that shows the tremendous diversity of Catalan butterfly species and their relationship with their natural environment: mimicry, symbiosis, crypsis etc. This museum, which is truly unique within its speciality, attracts visitors from all over the world. It is an obligatory visit for those interested in discovering more about this area of natural heritage and who would like to know more about the different natural processes in which these insects are involved.

Amongst the examples on display, it is possible to see a truly unique butterfly that was discovered in the Pyrenees in 1974 and whose singularity has attracted the attention of specialists from all over the world. In the public exhibition, it is also possible to see more than four thousand exhibits, which show the biological diversity of these creatures in Catalonia, and marvel at their many and varied colours and forms. But the exhibition goes further than this: it reveals the important role played by butterflies as insects and their contribution to the conservation of biodiversity. Butterflies do not live in isolation from their environment: they interact with it in different ways that offer benefits to other living beings at every level.

The Museu de les Papallones de Catalunya organises a series of activities aimed at making the fascinating, but largely unknown, world of butterflies and insects better known and understood. These activities include photographic competitions, school workshops and commented nature tours, which are aimed at groups of families and friends. There are also guided visits to the museum and a "meeting with the stars" at the beginning of August. There are a series of activities to increase understanding of the fascinating world of butterflies and insects. Would you like to visit us?
