  • Did you know that Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer was inspired to write "La creu del diable" by Bellver de Cerdanya?

In the summer of 1860, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer spent a few days in Bellver de Cerdanya (La Cerdanya-Pyrenees) and took advantage of his stay to write one of his legends "La creu del diable" (The Devil's Cross). This is remembered by the commemorative plaque on the façade of the house in which he then stayed.

    The legend went like this:

"...The lord of the Segre was the master of Sant Martí dels Castells and he was so self-seeking and ruthless with his subjects that they were all frightened of him. When the knight marched off to fight against the Moors, the local population lived in peace for three years, but then he returned and reclaimed outstanding tributes. The whole village decided to make a stand against his evil intentions and with a combination of hard work and cunning, they managed to win the battle and kill the lord. After that, no-one else would return to the castle and the weeds gradually covered its paths and hid it from the sight of travellers.  The people had forgotten about the bad times when a gang of bandits again sowed fear amongst the local inhabitants. These people eventually captured the leader of the gang, who wore the armour of the deceased lord of the Segre .When the most respected citizens of the settlement met to judge the bandit chief, everyone in the comarca (local district) came to see the spectacle, but they were all surprised when they found that his armour was empty. To put an end to this curse, the local people decided to melt down the armour and build a cross with the resulting metal. This gave rise to what is now known as 'la creu del diable' (the devil's cross)...

Some of the most important places in Bellver de Cerdanya (la Cerdanya-the Pyrenees) that are associated with the writer include:

    1. The fabulous old quarter includes: the Plaça del Portal (square), Carrer del Mig, Plaça Major (High Street) and Church of Sant Jaume, all of which feature in the book.

2.The Torre de la Presó (Prison Tower) is one of the watchtowers that on the town's walls. In his legend "La creu del diable" the writer and poet Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer also locates the local prison in this tower.

    3. Sant Martí dels Castells (Saint Martin of the Castles) was once a very small hamlet with its own mayor and Romanesque parish church. Today, it contains the ruins of the church and the castle, as well as the manor house of the same name, which is still occupied. They say that this was the place where the poet was inspired to write the legend "La creu del diable".
