Fishing

Fishing, another tourist attraction for Lleida!

Lleida is a well-known destination for those who love the mountains, skiing, culture and/or adventure sports. This privileged natural setting, which extends from the Lleida plain to the peaks of the Catalan Pyrenees, contains many rivers and lakes and offers numerous possibilities for fishing.

Why is it interesting to come and fish in Catalonia?

The common Pyrenean trout (Salmo trutta) is one of the most appreciated species amongst those who love fishing. It can be found in the 600 km of crystal-clear rivers in which authorised fishing is controlled by the General Directorate for Forests. The tremendous beauty of the local scenery has played an important role in the development of catch and return fishing in this areas. Anglers are conscious of the fragility of this setting and many therefore opt for no-kill fishing, a modality that guarantees greater protection for the region’s fishing heritage. The Lleida territory includes 85 controlled fishing zones (ZPC): half of the total number in Catalonia.

Where to fish in Lleida.

The is little doubt that the best destination for anglers is the River Noguera Pallaresa in the comarca (local district) of El Pallars Sobirà, with its small rivers, lakes and reservoirs. There, you will be able to choose between the upper and lower parts of El Pallars. The former offers 240 km of rivers, 32 natural mountain pools and 3 reservoirs; the latter has over 50 km of rivers between El Romadriu and Lake Sant Antoni, in El Pallars Jussà. Those who love sport fishing can also visit L’Alta Ribagorça, the Val d’Aran, Els Pallars, L’Alt Urgell and La Cerdanya, as well as a few places in El Solsonès, to fish for salmonids (common trout). In the case of cyprinids (barb), the preferred destinations are the Cellers, Utxesa, Sant Antoni (Talarn), Oliana and Rialb reservoirs.

To fish in controlled fishing zones (ZPC), it is necessary to obtain a fishing permit. It is useful to know that there are special tariffs according to the type of fishing involved. Anglers who catch and kill fish (for a daily fee) pay almost twice as much as those who opt for no-kill fishing. The fishing licence can be obtained directly from the offices of the Department of Agriculture, Livestock Farming, Fisheries and Food of the Generalitat de Catalunya or via internet from the website http://www.gencat.cat (from processes/processes by type/permits and licences).

It is permitted to fish for cyprinids throughout the year. For salmonids, the season varies low mountain areas in the no-kill modality and high mountain areas in the no-kill modality.

Fishing in the rivers of Lleida is totally controlled and regulated in order to prevent excessive captures and to guarantee the protection of the river fauna. To fish there, it is necessary to first obtain a licence for sport fishing; this allows anglers to fish in free fishing areas, as long as no fish are killed.
