The writer Josep Pla described theÀger Valley (La Noguera) as a remote and distant paradise that hides a divine peace. The authenticity of its nature makes it a place in which it is possible to enjoy an almost infinite number of adventure sports, and nature routes for the whole family, with truly unique experiences such as hang-gliding, paragliding and powered parachute flights, and other exciting sports options.
The rich scenery and culture of the <="" b="">is bordered to the east and west by the congosts (gorges) of Terradets and Montrebei, while its northern and southern limits are defined by two other natural features: the Montsec and Montclús mountain chains.
The history of the municipality of Àger goes back to Neolithic times. It includes archaeological remains from the Roman period and the very important legacy of the conquests of Arnau Mir de Tost, including such emblematic elements as the Col.legiata (Collegiate Church) de Sant Pere d´Àger, which dates from the 11th century.
What to visit
Collegiate Church of Sant Pere d'Àger
A group of monuments in honour of Saint Peter: Collegiate Church and Castle. This Romanesque/Neo-Gothic style fortified enclosure was promoted by Arnau Mir de Tost, in the 11th century, within the context of the reconquest of the Àger Valley and the subsequent development of the settlement of Àger.
It was built on top of the ruins of the former Roman castle and Arab fortress.
The castle-palace and the famous Collegiate Church were built between 1034 and 1047 and entrusted to a community of canons. Work on the cloister began in the 14th century, under the auspices of Count Pere d´Urgell, and was finished in the 15th century. All that remains of the former splendour of St. Pere are a few ornaments and mural pictures that can now be found in the Museu Diocesà (Diocese Museum) de Lleida, the Museu Nacional d´Art de Catalunya (National Art Museum of Catalonia) and in the USA.
Church of Sant Vicenç
The origins of this single nave church stretch back to the 11th century. The temple of St. Salvador was later built onto the north wall, in the same century. The bell tower dates from the 13th century. The Neo-Classical south-west nave was built between at around the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries. Inside the church there is: a roman sarcophagus dating from the 3rd century which was originally housed in the Collegiate Church of St. Pere; the Mare de Déu(Virgin) de Colobor and a magnificent baroque style organ. Roman Road
The Roman Road of Àger dates from the 2nd century and is known as the old road to Balaguer. Until quite recently, the conserved section ran from its starting point at Vilamajor (near Les Avellanes) to Sant Martí d'Àger. At present about 2.5 kilometres of paved road, are conserved between the village of Àger and the Àger pass, with an average width of 4.5 metres.
Routes
The territory of Àger is formed by the area in and around the parrish of Sant Vicenç. From the second half of the 11th century onwards, a moment that coincided with the construction of the castle and residence of Arnau Mir de Tost and the building of the Canon’s Church of Sant Pere upon the ruins of a previous 10th century Islamic fortress, Àger became a walled town with three entrance gates, called Pedró, Solsdevila and Sant Martí. The castle area, which had fortifications in keeping with the Lower Roman Empire period, looked out over the road that led from the Pyrenees, was used until the Moorish period and included the ecclesiastical quarter and was surrounded by the houses of knights and nobles. In the Plaça Major (Main Square) visitors will find the old Montardit pharmacy, which dates from the beginning of the 20th century. Behind this building are the remains of the medieval Chapel of Hope. The street plan is typical of the medieval period, with a radial configuration centred on the castle, with a series of transversal streets. In the Solsdevila quarter, it is possible to find the Church of St. Vicenç, whose oldest stones date from the 11th century, as well as the 15th century municipal hospital, the old town hall and the former cemetery. També es poden visitar el forn comunal del segle XIV i les restes del molí medieval d´oli.
