  • Thanks to the natural obstacles that impede access to it, La Baronia de Rialb (la Noguera) in the valley of the river Rialb, which is shut away between the Pre-Pyrenean mountains of Boumort and Montsec, has always been a formidable refuge. This is especially true of its upper part, which is furrowed by narrow gullies and almost impassable ravines. The peaks and slopes of these mountains were gradually populated by hamlets, farms, fortified houses and chapels, which became a veritable line of fortifications. We therefore invite you to come and feel the pulse of this land called La Baronia de Rialb, convinced that you will discover a comfortable setting which will transmit a whole series of pleasant sensations.

    Romanesque heritage

This territory, which has been populated since prehistoric times, was very important until the 14th century. This is clearly evident from the existence of 24 Romanesque style hermitages and churches. Amongst this Romanesque architecture, it is possible to highlight the grandeur and beauty of the former Benedictine monastery of Sta. Maria de Gualter (11th – 12th century). Unfortunately, this group of buildings was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War due to the explosion of an ammunition store.

The church of Sta. Maria de Palau (11th century) has a magnificent chevet which is decorated with Lombard style motifs.

    Prehistoric heritage

Remains from prehistoric times include the Sols de Riu dolmen, a funerary monument that was originally erected over 4,000 year ago, but which had to be transferred to its present site to save it from the waters of the Rialb reservoir.

    Popular gatherings and festivals

    • Festival of the rose of la Baronia de Rialb:

      in august.
    • Popular gathering at the Monastery of Sta. Mª de Gualter.
      in july.
    • Gathering to celebrate ST. Josep Maria Escrivà.
