What to visit
CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA: This temple was declared a Bé Cultural d’Interès Nacional (Cultural Value of National Interest) in 1931. Building work began at the end of the 12th century and the monumental portal was added in the 13th century, but the bell tower was not finished until well into the 14th century. Its construction coincided with the transition from the Romanesque to the Gothic style, and it is possible to see how these two styles interact, with examples of some of the best characteristics of each style. The most important feature, from an artistic point of view, is the main portal, which was built in the style of the Escola Lleidatana (Lleida School).
CASA DE LA VILA (TOWN HALL): The lower part of this building has a porched structure which combines with a more austere style that integrates well with the other porches in the square. Of particular interest are the moulded decorations on the sides of the building and the garrets whose characteristics are typical of the local area. Inside the building, it is possible to see a space originally used as a prison. All of the buildings in the square together with the porches of the neighbouring streets and buildings form a truly interesting group. In 2003, they were declared a Bé Cultural d’Interès Nacional.
PLAÇA DEL MERCADAL (MARKET SQUARE): The original plans for the Mercadal (Market Place), which dates from 1804, are now kept at Ca la Vila. This is a square with a symmetrical, porched, square layout, with each of its sides having eight, very similar, covered arcades in front of its respective houses, which provide a uniform appearance. The Mercadal Square was one of the first Catalan market squares – in fact, it has been suggested that perhaps the first – to be built following a previously designed project.
FUNDACIÓ PRIVADA ESPAI GUINOVART (GUINOVART FUNDATION): The Espai Guinovart is located at the site of the old municipal market, which was built by the architect Domènec i Torres and ceded by the Ajuntament d’Agramunt (Town Council) to house an art centre in 1994. The Espai Guinovart is a space for exhibiting the work of the modern artist Josep Guinovart. It is a venue that hosts various activities, including temporary exhibitions, talks and conferences, concerts and recitals, which are all organised with the aim of bringing the general public into closer contact with art.
To fully understand this work, it is necessary for visitors to put themselves in the shoes of a 9-year-old boy who was sent to the country as a refugee during the Spanish Civil War and stayed near Agramunt with members of his family. This was an experience that produced very close ties with nature and above all with country activities and life in the woods. In the words of Guinovart “our intention was not to create a museum, but rather a work that belonged to Agramunt, its surrounding area, its inhabitants, these lands and their seasons”. Josep Guinovart, who died in Barcelona in 2007, wanted to share those experiences that so marked his own life with people visiting Agramunt.
FUNDACIÓ PRIVADA GUILLEM VILADOT “LO PARDAL” (VILADOT FOUNDATION): The Fundació Privada Guillem Viladot “Lo Pardal” was created in order to conserve the works ofGuillem Viladot (Agramunt, 1922 – Barcelona, 1999). This man from Agramunt was responsible for developing a line of creative research that eventually led him to “poesia visual” (visual poetry), a discipline that goes beyond the norms of written language and strings together images of poetic value. His work can be divided into 3 clearly different areas: narrative, visual poetry and “volumetry”. The last two periods of his work focus on a series of very different objects. These range from numerous references to the tools used for working in the country to parts from cars. He took these items out of their original contexts, transformed them, and gave them poetic value, thereby transcending the limits of written language.
MUSEU ETNOLÒGIC MUNICIPAL D’AGRAMUNT (ETHNOLOGICAL MUSEUM): The Museu Etnològic Municipal (Municipal Ethnological Museum), located on the lower floor of the same building that houses the Espai Guinovartwas inaugurated in September 1980. This museum has a large collection of agricultural implements and tools associated with traditional crafts and trades, household objects, architectonic material and old photographs of the town, all of which have been ceded by the local inhabitants. The museum also contains: a “Roman reu”, some oil pincers dating from the Roman period, part of a Roman mosaic from Castellnou d’Agramunt, the mechanism of the old bell tower clock that worked until 1991, a cinema projector from one of the three cinemas that used to operate in the town, part of the door of the church of Santa Maria, coins from the time of Ponç de Cabrera (1234-1243), former municipal bank notes (1936-1939), decorations from the festival of Sant Antoni, and many other elements that have now fallen into disuse and belong to local history.
