What to visitTHE AIGUABARREIGThe diversity of fauna and flora is exceptional, and merely by approaching the river Segre one can discover an enormous range of flora, and water and riverside birds which make their homes in the same municipality as some of the scarcest steppeland birds in Europe. You can follow routes that take from a short while to a whole day. At the same time there are numerous historical remains to visit, either from our recent past (war trenches, graves, etc.) or from a more distant one (settlement of Bovalà, necropolis of the Roques of Sant Formatge, the Montcada Palace, Monastery of Avinganya, , etc.). NECROPOLIS OF THE ROQUES OF SANT FORMATGELate bronze age tumular necropolis – urn fields. 1000-650 B.C. Iberian settlement. 4th – 3rd Century BC. War trenches. 1938. It is the first incineration cemetery documented in the southwest of Catalonia, with small mounds covering the urns containing the ashes and the dowry of the deceased. The settlement is situated at the highest point of the Roques of Sant Formatge. It is one of the most important Visigoth sites in all of Catalonia. THE MONTCADA PALACEIf wanting to stroll around the village it is recommended to go to the old quarter where one can admire exterior views of the palace that belonged first of all to the Montcadas and later to the Medinaceli. THE CHURCH OF SANTA MARIAIn the middle of the village the parochial church of Santa Maria is of note. Built in 1745, in a style typical of its epoch, subsequently during the Civil War the images, altars, a valuable tin organ, the Sant Crist d’Avinganya and the image of the Sant Àngel were all destroyed in the village square. TRINITARIAN MONASTERY OF THE MARE DE DÉU DELS ÀNGELS OF AVINGANYASituated 2 km to the south of the village of Seròs it dates from the year 1201 and is one of the first Trinitarian convents in the world. These itineraries are signposted in the municipality, and there are indications along the route. Following the Segre we enter the Route of the Aiguabarreig, a route in the shade of the largest gallery woodlands in Catalunya, which allows us to choose different itineraries in the direction of the rivers Ebre or Cinca. During this itinerary, organised groups can also partake in different activities of nature discovery which we will inform about at theAiguabarreig Office of the Ajuntament of Seròs.
